Client needs and challenges

This ambitious design was pitched by the architect to their client. The main challenge finding a way to position this staircase in front of an open entryway while keeping an open perspective from the kitchen to the dressing room so the windows on both sides would match up throughout the floor.

Why they chose us

The architect contacted Scalin for our renowned precision, especially when it comes to well-defined angles – paramount for this design, as wax finishes do not work on uneven concrete.

Our Solution

To keep an open floor plan from the kitchen to the dressing room, we suggested a rack-and-pinion staircase supported by a dividing wall on one side and suspended on the other, with a waxed concrete finish and painted iron balustrade. The landing support was reinforced by a metal I-beam , positioned at the right  angle of the staircase finish. The formwork was made to measure on-site for this staircase, according to the dimensions mentioned above and requested by the architect and customers.

“The result is everything I envisioned: efficiency through simplicity. The crémaillère allows the design to display light shadows and a graphical touch, letting its presence shine through the space discretely. The general design isn’t hidden in any way; it is shown freely: there is no smoothed-out surface under the stairs, but rather a footprint of the steps it is made of”.
